Last week, I had the privilege of leading a workshop titled, "With Nature in Mind: The Role of Nature in Psychological Well-being & Resiliency - An Experiential Exploration" at the International Positive Psychology Association (IPPA) World Congress. It was an inspiring event, filled with moments of learning, connection, and a shared appreciation for nature's role in mental health. The engagement and feedback from attendees were beyond my expectations.
One participant, a dedicated Park Ranger, shared how their personal experience during the pandemic led them to practice reciprocity with nature, which became a powerful tool in managing depression and anxiety. They noted, "It was very validating to see there is science and application of this bond of nature and our wellbeing." Their journey toward self-healing and their ambition to incorporate Positive Psychology in their work as a ranger echoes the purpose of our workshop - highlighting the crucial bond between nature, well-being, and resilience.
We believe that nature offers a multitude of gifts that can be transformative for our mental health. Our participant’s account of planning to conduct Awe and Gratitude walks at their park further reinforces this conviction. It is always encouraging to see professionals from diverse fields recognizing the benefits of Nature Informed therapies and intending to integrate them into their practices.
Another participant shared data-driven evidence of the calming effects of our day in nature. They noted a significant improvement in their health bio-markers, specifically an excellent Heart Rate Variability (HRV), indicating a reduction in stress. This real-time, personal data reaffirms the scientific evidence we discussed during the workshop and strengthens the case for nature's role in bolstering mental health.
The success of this workshop underscores the growing recognition and acceptance of nature's therapeutic potential. It is heartening to see attendees not only understanding the science behind it but also experiencing it firsthand. These personal testimonies and data-driven results emphasize the tangible benefits of Nature Informed therapy.
