Nature-Informed Therapy Reentry Initiative

Supporting Returning Citizens Through Nature-Based Healing

Overview

The Nature-Informed Therapy (NIT) Reentry Initiative is a pioneering program integrating nature-focused therapeutic interventions into the reentry process for formerly incarcerated individuals. Piloted at the Maryland Reentry Resource Center (MDRRC), the initiative offers 12-week sessions that blend outdoor activities, mindfulness practices, and hands-on environmental work to reduce stress, boost mental health, and support long-term reintegration. Supported by a $75,000 state grant in 2024, this pilot served 15 participants, reinforcing the critical role of nature connection in rehabilitation.

Our Role

  • Program Design & Implementation: Co-created an NIT curriculum, emphasizing guided hikes, nature-inspired journaling, and gardening or conservation projects.

  • Training & Facilitation: Staff and leaders received specialized training from the Center for Nature Informed Therapy, ensuring best practices in nature-based interventions for returning citizens.

  • Environmental Partnerships: Collaborations with community organizations, including Anne Arundel Watershed Stewards Academy and Scenic Rivers Land Trust, provided environmental work opportunities that linked skill-building to mental well-being.

  • Evaluation & Individualized Support: A case manager worked with participants to track progress, address barriers (e.g., transportation, skepticism about nature-based activities), and adapt approaches to individual needs.

Impact

  • Enhanced Emotional Regulation: Many participants reported lower stress levels and improved coping skills, thanks to consistent engagement with nature (e.g., mindful moments during hikes).

  • Reduced Barriers: Indoor alternatives like sensory boxes, nature-inspired décor, and herbal tea stations were offered in poor weather—helping participants maintain a sense of nature connection.

  • Skill-Building & Purpose: Hands-on environmental projects served as both therapeutic and practical training, supporting participants’ employment goals while reinforcing a sense of agency.

  • Expanded Vision: MDRRC plans to secure additional funding and integrate NIT permanently into its reentry services, underscoring nature’s pivotal role in mental health and workforce development.

By weaving nature-informed therapy into core reentry services, this program highlights a holistic path to self-sufficiency, resilience, and long-term success for returning citizens—empowering participants to reconnect with both themselves and the natural world.
